I stumbled upon a web site not long ago that described planning and scheduling software for manufactures. There was an article on it that really caught my attention titled Planning and Scheduling for Modern Manufacturing on the web site production-scheduling-software-portal.com. The web-site is a great resource for scheduling software and offers articles on advanced planning systems, Software as a Service programs and Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
This article compares more traditional planning and scheduling systems with the new and more modern versions. Advanced planning and scheduling software (APS) should allow manufactures to answer questions such as “In which plant should we run this production? When should we promise this customer’s order by?”
In general the older systems (such as MRP, manufacturing resource planning) use an approach that is more of a step-by-step system to distribute material and production capacities. This method unfortunately does not adapt to changes easily. In addition it considers materials and capacity separately and some of the applications do not consider material availability or capacity constraints.
The more modern APS systems plan and schedule production based on available materials and capacity at the same time. The system will search for a result by sorting through thousands of possibilities before it arrives at a final conclusion that is realistic and the best possible solution for the manufacture. A result such as this requires real-time access to data, total asset visibility, performance metrics and automated decision-support tools. In addition these systems have the capability of planning schedules where multiple locations are involved.
