Production scheduling software can offer wonderful return on investment if the right needs are addressed at programming and implementation time. Identifying and focusing on the right scheduling needs can be the difference between a system that makes you more or less efficent. Will the system make us money, or will it cost us time? Aggrevating the employees and changing the process flow for the worse would harm you in the end.
There are a wide variety of systems on the market and the canned systems are almost useless in terms of meeting all of your scheduling needs. An out of the box scheduling system can be a great communication tool and allow your team to coomunicate the schedule electronically. However, it may not display the data that your team really needs and will not address complex scheduling needs.
Scheduling needs vary greatly as you compare one company to another. Most companies are concerned with timelines and ontime delivery. Many companies also need the ability for the customer service department to gauge capacity for new jobs and availablilty to promise capabilities for their customers. Efficiency is often gained with good scheduling systems. The system can sequence the product mix in an efficient manner to eliminate change-over expense. Other needs may include energy reduction and production mixes that aid in transportation schedules. Most of these needs are way out of scope of a canned system.
This is a good blog on production scheduling The Production Scheduling Blog. The blog offers a lot of information on scheduling and capacity planning.
